RE: Buddy's herding lesson

There are several herding venues (organizations): ASCA, AKC, AHBA, USBCHA. I'm only familiar with the United States Border Collie Handler’s Association and the aligned local clubs; these do not have a minimum participation age for a dog competing.
Until recently there was no need to bring Border Collies for instinct testing; most of them were bred from working lines. Now there are show ring bred, agility bred, flyball bred, obedience bred, BYB produced pups in addition to working bred.
Texas has a strong USBCHA aligned herding community for both sheep and cattle.

RE: What a Way to Start the Day! Mik Geese on the Loose!

Isn't life with farm animals "fun".
We got back from a week in SC at my inlaws and found two sheep had gotten hay bale twine wrapped around their body (neck and a leg). Flipping a 250lb ram on his back to free him from the twine is not easy.

RE: Buddy's herding lesson

At 5 months Journey shows interest; however, at 5 months Journey is a bit too young for real training. All that "facing" with the goat can be bad for an inexperienced dog, creating bad habits and/or possibly turning the dog off to working livestock. Wait a few more months and you should see a big change in Journey's attitude on stock. We have found that 8-10 months is generally a good age to start training young Border Collies. Exposing them to livestock earlier is okay as long as you or the livestock do not put too much pressure/stress on the dog (like a goat turning and facing off a dog). This is based upon about 10 years of experience raising, training, and competing with Border Collies in sheepherding.

It's not their weight; it's the 4-hoof drive that gives them the power.

If you want to avoid getting knocked down and stepped on you could try ducks.

Kathadins are really not that big (ewes 120-150lbs); our RomneyxBorder Leicesters ewes run 150-200lbs and our Romney ram is probably 250lbs. He's a handful to flip to trim his feet.

River Road Lives Up To Its Name

http://www.wusa9.com/9slideshows/River_Road_Watermain/River_Road_09.jpg
All Rescued Safely From River Rd. Water Main Break
Rescuers scrambled helicopters and boats to pull commuters from frigid floodwaters unleashed by a massive water main break Tuesday on a commuter road just outside Washington.
One neighbor described the torrent as a river that filled the street after the rupture of a main measuring 5-1/2 feet in diameter.
"I thought it might be a minor leak, then suddenly I stepped outside and 'My God!"' said Raj Bhansaly, whose house is about 50 feet from the flood. "It looked literally like the Potomac River."
Television images showed two people in a minivan climbing into a basket lowered from a helicopter overhead. A boat also was used to rescue motorists from waters at least 4 feet deep. At least one person could be seen sitting in a two-door vehicle as the flood gushed past.
About a dozen people had been rescued from their vehicles, Montgomery County fire department spokesman Pete Piringer said. Piringer said crews were having trouble getting to people because the water was moving so swiftly.
He said several of those rescued were treated for hypothermia. The temperature was around 20 degrees in the area, the National Weather Service said.
From his house, Bhansaly said he could see two cars in the rushing water that were tied to rescue vehicles with ropes. He said he wasn't worried about water damage to his home because it sits on a hill.
The 66-inch water main broke about 8 a.m. on River Road near the Congressional Country Club in Bethesda, authorities said.
John White, a Washington Suburban Sanitary Commission spokesman, said the valves to shut off the water were underwater. White said he did not know exactly where the break occurred.

RE: Who do I ask to evaluate Harlee's feeding schedule?

Wow, EVO recommends about 900kcal/day for a 35lb adult. We feed 750kcal/day to our 35lb working dogs. Out of curiosity I checked our food's feeding recommendation, it was about 800 kcal/day for a 35 lb dog.
Our Border Collies get fed once a day; the greyhound gets fed twice a day because when he is fed once a day he pukes bile when he's empty. Our feeding schedule and amounts are based upon the body condition of our dogs.

RE: Buddy's herding lesson

We know Buddy had fun; did you have fun?
The instructor in me just can't keep quiet....
Go to your sheep not the dog.
MOVE so your dog has some place to bring the sheep.
Sorry, I just couldn't help myself. The two of you look like you're off to a good start. So have you started looking for land yet?
Mark
P.S. Buddy is not that pushy; Renee's first dog ran the sheep into her, knocking Renee down, and then proceeded to push the sheep over the top of Renee.

RE: Experation dates on canned foods...?

I found a couple of cans of pineapple in the back of the pantry that are about 10 years old... hence my question.
No bulging of the cans. Whaddya' think?? Edible??Product past the expieration date indicates either the manufacturer knows it can be going bad OR shelf life has not been tested that long.
Pineapple is acidic so it should have a long shelf life; however, it's acidic so it could be eating the can if the can was not coated on the inside to protect against acid.

RE: Pet Picture Fun -- the tongues are out!

BC....that's what it is, never could figure out why my dogs didn't come when called.....it's the ear are for show not for listening!!We were at a sheepdog trial one year where there was a vet performing BAER tests and collecting DNA for a research study. I had a few of my dogs tested and then told them they no longer had an excuse for not listening to me. :)

RE: What IDIOT drew up the plans for this house?

Julie,
We built our house and chose not to put in a laundry tub; we didn't want to give up the space in our laundry room. But we did put this in our garage:
http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v337/Pipedream_Farm/Odds%20and%20Ends/IMG_0317.jpg
Besides washing out paint brushes & rollers, filling dog water dishes, cleaning up soiled dog crates, bathing dogs, and washing out & filling duck waterers; it is also good for.......
http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v337/Pipedream_Farm/Ducks/IMG_0325.jpg
Our garage is not heated. The water lines can be drained when needed; there are shut-off valves and low point drains just inside the basement next to the garage. If needed I could heat the space under the tub from inside the basment.

RE: How good is your dogs food?

You are right about semantics. However, 2-3 lb lighter bags means we'll spend more money on gas throughout the year (more frequent trips to buy 5 bags) getting dog food then the increase in dog food price the 2-3lb lighter bags are saving the manufacturer. Our storage is for bags not loose food.
Just raise the price.

RE: How good is your dogs food?

How does changing to smaller bags lower their costs significantly; unless they changed bag manufacturers and their new one doesn't carrier the bigger bag they've been using?
It sounds to me like a psychological marketing move to increase their profit margin without increasing the amount of money their customers have to spend per bag.

RE: Beagle Puppy (or Two)?

Raising 2 pups at once is hard work; if done right it's more than 2x the work of raising 1. We've done this 3 times; twice with littermates and once with pups from different litters. It's VERY easy for the pups to get more attached to each other than to you. It's very difficult for them to focus on you when their playmate is right there. To properly raise 2 pups at once they need more one-on-one time with you than time with each other. We would allow the pups to play with each other to run off excess energy then they would be crated and each would get one-on-one time with us for bonding and training. The only reason we can raise two pups at once is my wife is home all the time.
Good luck with your new pup. I would highly recommend you wait on a second pup until you're first one is bonded to you and will listen to you in the presence of very fun distractions.

:) I just found this: In 2007, Edmund Storms, a cold fusion researcher, said that the hydrino model provides a possible explanation to cold fusion.
